GET ON YOUR BIKE WITH BIKEMOBILITY!
A new scheme which aims to make cycling accessible for all has been launched at the County Showground, Haverfordwest.
Every Wednesday, BikeMobility will provide a variety of adapted adult and children’s bikes for people of differing abilities, on outdoor or indoor tracks.
Cyclists will be able to try out handcycles, trikes, quadcycles, go-karts, tandems, wheelchair transporters, and wheelchair bikes.
There will also be standard bikes for people who want to refresh their cycling skills.
The scheme has been established by Pembrokeshire County Council in association with BikeAbility Wales.
Funding has been provided by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Sustainable Travel Centres fund, with revenue funding from Health Challenge Pembrokeshire, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, and the Countryside Council for Wales.
Cllr Jamie Adams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Planning, said the Council was grateful for their support, and thanked Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society for providing the venue.
He added: “This is very much a feather in the cap of Pembrokeshire. There is not only the opportunity for people to come on a weekly basis, but tourists can also make use of the facility when they visit the County.
“I’m sure that this project will be a resounding success. I would like to say to all those who can use the facilities, that we hope you have huge enjoyment from them, and that as many people as possible make use of this fantastic new scheme.”
The weekly BikeMobility sessions will be run by Mike Cherry, project co-ordinator for BikeAbility Wales.
He said the project was the idea of Laura Bolton of Sustrans in Swansea, who sadly died before the project came to completion.
Her work provided the foundation for the development of BikeMobility and there are now several such schemes in Wales, including Swansea and Cardiff.
* BikeMobility sessions are now held at the County Showground in Haverfordwest every Wednesday between 10am and 3pm. Sessions will be held on an indoor track if the weather is inclement. School groups and dedicated organisations are welcomed, as well as individuals who would like to refresh their cycling skills. Suggested donations are £3/ adult, £2/ child. If you are interested in attending a session, contact Mike Cherry on 07554 634 963 to book a session or visit the following link: www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/bikemobility
